Bharatanatyam is a classical dance from South India formerly known as Dasi Attam or Sadir Attam. The choreographic and musical repertoire is traditionally transmitted from master to disciple. It includes different types of compositions that calls for the technical and interpretative qualities of the dancer. Made up of both nrtta (pure dance) and nrtya (interpretative dance), the Bharanatayam is distinguished by the subtlety of facial expressions (abhinaya), the precision of hand gestures (hasta) and the complexity of rhythmic patterns (jati ).
