Julie Beaulieu

Dancer and choreographer

Dancer, scholar and teacher, Julie Beaulieu holds a master degree in dance (2015 – mention of honour) from University of Quebec in Montreal. Disciple of Vidwan Rohini Imarati, she regularly travels to India to perfect the art of Bharatanatyam, to perform and to realize choreographic research residencies. Her past collaborations and creations brought her to work also in Canada, Italy, Germany and France. As a contemporary dancer, Julie as collaborated with choreographers Marie-Julie Asselin, Emmanuel Jouthe, Louise Bédard and Roger Sinha to name a few. She also worked as choreographer-dancer with Les Demi-Lunes Violentes from 1996 to 2006. In 2010, she cofounded Saṃskāra : les artisans du passage with the musician and scholar Jonathan Voyer. The collective’s mission is to promote transcultural dialogue through the arts. Julie is an associate member of CERIAS (Centre d'études et de recherche sur l'Inde, l'Asie du Sud et sa diaspora) and a member of the International Dance Council CID. She teaches dance at St-Laurent’s College and is a yoga instructor certified by the International Sivananda Yoga Vedenta Center. She is offering Bharatanatyam classes and conference demonstration on demand. Julie is now involved in a doctoral project (UQAM, doctorat en études et pratiques des arts). The concepts of transculturality, métissage and migration of gesture are part of her research interests. Since 2017, her deep interest in the history of Bharatanatyam, that can be traced back to the Intangible Cultural Heritage of South Indian devadasis, brought her to participate in extensive dance-fieldwork residencies in India and Hungary, curated by Dr. Saskia Kersenboom (Paramparai Foundation for Performing Arts of South India).

Jonathan Voyer

Musician

Jonathan Voyer has a Baccalaureate in Education, a Master's degree in Religious Studies and a PhD in Artistic Research from the University of Quebec in Montreal (UQAM). He received his initial training with voice teacher Louise Yard from whom he learned the Bel Canto singing technic. Disciple of santoor maestro Pandit Satish Vyas and of vocalist Pandit Somanath Mardur, he now evolves in the Hindustani Classical Music tradition. With dancer Julie Beaulieu, he founded the company Saṃskāra to promote transcultural dialogue through arts. Jonathan is an independent researcher associated to Centre d’études et de recherche sur l’Inde, l’Asie du Sud et sa diaspora (CERIAS) and performs regularly in Canada and abroad.
